Fya Fox – ‘NEED IT’ / New Single

Ireland’s alt-pop newcomer, FYA FOX, has released her new single, ‘NEED IT’.

With its release, the Dublin-based singer hopes to build on the successes of her previous releases, which have created a buzz in the alt-pop scene.

The new track centres around themes of empowerment and finds the singer relishing in the liberating dismissal of an unhealthy relationship.

While the single’s predecessor, ‘Sunset’, features moderately more complex and ambient instrumentation, ‘Need It’ takes it down a notch further and uses little more than the bare instrumental bones.

The sparse synths on the track, for example, give it a wistful mood and allow FYA’s delicate vocal performance to take centre stage, while the simplistic ‘80s-esque bass hook drives the track forward.

There’s strength in the song’s lyrical content too; FYA does well in conveying the unsavoury yet repetitive nature of the relationship she has left; the repetition of “There you are again” lays bare the strenuous and indefinite cycle of her attempting to move on, while “Looking at it now, I think I’m better off without” points to the singer’s acquisition of closure. The lyrics strike similarities with the emotive and recollective songwriting of Lana Del Rey and London Grammar – two of FYA’s key influences.

Though retrospective, FYA’s lyrics don’t allow any room for regret and prefer instead to revel in connotations of freedom and independence: “Your voice, I don’t wanna hear it / Your touch, I don’t wanna feel it” she declares in the track’s chorus, as she is finally able to take charge.

The song feels like a statement of independence and, with its feelings of empowerment, it seems to offer a supportive hand to those that need one.

‘NEED IT’ is out now.
