Mawpit – ‘Harlem’ / New Single

Mawpit return with new single ‘Harlem’. It’s the latest to come from their upcoming EP Common Enemy, which has already seen a string of singles released so far. It’s honestly the series that’s kept me gripped the most recently, and this is coming from somebody who has seen Tiger King. I mean, really, why is there a second series? Dude’s still in prison. It makes no sense.

One thing that does makes sense is that ‘Harlem’ makes a lot of noise. Something that has become a trait of Mawpit’s releases this year. The single was inspired by the life of Madam C J Walker, an individual who became a millionaire in 1920s American despite being a black woman (what!!!), throwing a middle finger to the oppression that existed so strongly back then. To honour someone who was an all round badass, ‘Harlem’ comes out swinging with bold statements delivered throughout. Stealing the show and captivating attention like a real Phoenix in the flames does.

It makes for a defiant listen. One that makes me feel like a boss listening to it. I also love that it ramps up the brashness of Mawpit’s sound without taking too much away from the overarching narrative the singles have revealed from Common Enemy too. It’s another banger from the trio, and I cannot wait to hear that season finale of an EP.
