Lou Roy unveils a delectable collection of tracks on her debut album Pure Chaos. The ten-track offering flaunts intimate soundscapes, warming vocals and thoughtful lyrics. Let’s dive straight in…
The album kicks off with the track that first brought my attention to Roy. Inspired by norse mythology, ‘Valkyrie’ is a charmingly sassy composition featuring light and breezy sounds, including the tapping of a water bottle as one of the lead instruments. Its weightless and care-free ambience makes it a stand out on the album.
Pure Chaos is dotted with songs running under two minutes. While the tracks are short, it’s in these bursts we see Roy’s personality shine through. For example, ‘Scroll’ is a folk-infused expression of losing touch with the real world, while ‘Down Since ’07’ is an introspective dark-pop love letter to her past.
Roy pulls on the listener’s heartstrings with the emotionally shattering ‘U.D.I.D’. A wistful vocal line and hasty rhythm putting you in her shoes as she shares her melancholic outlook. ‘U.D.I.D’ is perhaps the most serious track on the album, with the care-free attitude and humour from her other tracks absent, making it that much more impactful.
Pure Chaos closes with the stunning ‘Dream’. The song is the ultimate conclusion to the album, a powerful composition filled with everything Roy has to offer, ‘Dream’ gives the sense of the climactic moment in a film, soundtracked by soaring vocals and orchestral strings. It’s a track of pure emotion and pure honesty, perfectly capturing what Lou Roy is all about.
Pure Chaos was produced by Sarah Tudzin (Illuminati Hotties) and is out now via Balloon Machine.
