Essex’s Rooskin are back with ‘She Never Says Goodbye’ following the April release of ‘Cruising’ with DGM regulars, in earnest.
Noted as their most ‘refined’ track yet, the new single is a laid-back, summery offering. Kicking off with bass and a steady drum beat alongside soft, effect laden vocals, it’s not long until the band’s signature style comes to play.
Painting a picture of a longing for the “she” in question who never ‘says goodbye’, but ‘see you later by the look in her eye’, the track also grapples with getting ahead of oneself. Dual octave vocals and some pretty impressive high notes make an appearance amongst their familiar indie surf-pop sound, bringing some doubt to the mix in ‘That’s what I chose to believe/ Try not to think of what else it could mean’, before admitting ‘It’s getting late and you don’t have to tell me/Here I go again, running away with myself’.
Vocals soar in the chorus while the track transforms into something potentially psychedelic and dream-like. It’s a section of song you can envisage playing as you cruise through a tunnel, or perhaps one to soundtrack a beach road trip to the lad’s very own Southend.
But then we see the doubt solidified, ‘Don’t call her up on the phone/ She says she needs a little time alone/I was acting like I know for sure but now it feels like I never met her before’. And while even up to this admission soaring vocals keep the track interesting, but still low-key, we then see a real build up in the last 40 seconds or so.
With singular vocals not only increasing in volume in ‘Here I go again, running away with myself/ Here I go again, running away with myself’, we also see a change in attitude. There comes an instrumental breakdown with the addition of electric guitar and interjections of ‘keeps running away’ and ‘she never/ she never/she never says goodbye’, capturing an exasperated ! if there ever were one.
It’s certainly a track to sit back and relax to, one that could quite easily become a staple of a sunny weekend, and we can’t wait for what the lads may have in store next.
