Kindelan – ‘The Other Side’ / New Single

The Other Side’ is the debut single from Kindelan, a Yorkshire-based songwriter who’s relaunching after ten years of writing. While a lot of songs focus on big emotional moments like love, loss, celebration, Kindelan’s first offering discusses the moments in between instead.

“The Other Side was written exploring my personal experience with the idiom ‘the grass is always greener on the other side’” Kindelan states. “,and my impression that humans often wish for what they don’t have, but rarely make the move to reach this ‘greener’ place.”

It’s easy to announce a new change or goal, but what’s rarely mentioned is how difficult and terrifying doing that new thing is. ‘The Other Side’ illustrates this with an instrumental fuelled by the anxiety of change. The drums move in constant motion, flitting in size throughout and almost treading over the other layers to maintain an unstable quality. What I love hearing is the main riff of the guitars, which kicks off the song and reappears at various points when things seem under control. The vocals also do a great job at maintaining this unease, increasing in volume alongside the instrumental, battling to be heard.

Yet as unpredictable and jittery as it sounds, I can’t help but listen over and over again. There’s something quite cathartic about it that really makes it relatable, and easy to connect to Kindelan. ‘The Other Side’ is a fascinating debut that leaves me excited to hear more.
