Broken Dreams Club is the project of Bristol’s Amy Bevan, and last week saw the release of her second EP, Being Alive Is A Fucking Nightmare. Not only does its title nail the overall mood of life in general, but it also houses a soundtrack that makes this nightmare feel a little better. I can now incorporate dance moves into my daily screams.
‘Man In A Band’ opens the EP with a steady tempo that bleeds out of the airwaves and into the ears, snapping into place with effortless hooks that stick around for ages. Lyrics point out typical stereotypes of dudes in bands, from trying desperately to write hits while failing to connect with individuals, delivered in a way that sounds so done with the whole thing. There’s a lo-fi quality to it that adds some crunch to the instrumental, and the overlayered vocals on the chorus makes it so addictive.
‘Keanu Is Forever’ is a sweet tune dedicated to bigging up one of the most loved people on the planet, while also throwing a middle finger up to other people who tried to bring down Amy. It’s a solid power pop tune with some synth melodies added to really shake things up. Adding some chilled melodies in amongst the fuzzy guitars.
Amy’s own experiences of love and relationships are twisted in famous couples of varying functionalities on ‘Johnny Cash And June Carter’. Another fun tune that utilises charm throughout, before leading us onto ‘Memories Of You’, which retreats into the lo-fi style to produce a more subdued sound.
Being Alive Is A Fucking Nightmare is a great EP from Broken Dreams Club. It’s four songs that offer nothing but entertainment, with humour laced throughout its lyrics and instrumentals that are easy to consume. Good stuff.
