It’s crazy to think nearly a decade has passed since Circa Waves landed on our radar. 2015’s Young Chasers contributed heavily to a resurgence of Indie Rock in the mid 2010’s with a generational hit in ‘T-Shirt Weather’ leading the way. It certainly propelled the band towards a mainstream audience.
Four albums later and Circa Waves return with Never Going Under. While it still feels like the quartet have only just begun, their newest effort showcases a sound that’s certainly matured over the years. Yet while the depth increases, it retains a lot of the freshness that made their introduction so exciting.
This is proven immediately on the title track, which opens proceedings with a driving instrumental that fills the ears. Riffs and melodies are packed within this pacey number to keep the energy levels high, lead by a stern rhythm that ensures things get off on the right foot. ‘Do You Wanna Talk’ follows with an equally compelling performance, with a sense of freedom bouncing off of the walls. Its jovial verses launch into a fully loaded chorus that highlights the timeless appeal of Indie Rock. Creating an early earworm for the year.
‘Your Ghost’ sees the moodier sound of Circa Waves appear. Toning down the hooks to allow the mood to darken. Space is given to the instrumental, matching the lyrics. Especially in the breakdown that sees the band utilise harmonies to add further emotion to the mix. It succeeds at bringing variation to the album without removing the momentum that keeps things move nicely.
‘Electric City’ is the most care-free song on the record and provides nothing but good vibes. Filled with simple hooks throughout, it is bound to stick in your mind, leading nicely into ‘Want It All Today’, which piano-led sound struts its way into the ears.
Never Going Under is a great album. Circa Waves have delivered a record that showcases their ability to create catchy songs alongside deep cuts that experiment and explore new directions. Altogether creating a sound that shows maturity but also a side that’s as playful as ever. With a lot of the year still left to go, Circa Waves have firmly placed their mark on the scene with an album that’s sure to be enjoyed throughout it.
