‘Mourners Disco’ is the new single from Montreal’s Ghost Love. Not only is it determined to fill all space with its atmosphere, but it also shares the same name as the trio’s upcoming album. Set for release in April.
Vocalist David Rancourt says: “The song deals with the pain of loss and grief after my mother passed away but also the desire to transcend the pain and to keep dancing and celebrating her life through it. She supported me when I came out as queer and showed me to navigate difficult times in my life so really the song is a tribute to her strength and guidance. It also speaks to the desire to sometimes hold on to the pain or grief as it is the only feeling that sometimes reminds us of the person that we have lost.”
Steeped in its heavy topic, ‘Mourners Disco’ tries its best to move forward in spite of the pain it feels. Soft, emotive chords ease out of the speakers, producing a mood that surrounds the mind. Cloaking it in a fog that illustrates the topic wonderfully. It grabs attention immediately, but it’s what Ghost Love do with it that makes it so special.
As mentioned earlier, David wanted to celebrate his mother’s life and this is reflected in an instrumental packed with grooves. An assortment of drum machines are allowed to collide against one another, producing a rhythm section that is bolstered by warm bass notes. The chorus takes hold of the lyrics wishing to be “taken into the dark” to create a strong contrast that almost feels like it’s healing itself.
Its closing section features strings that sweep into the skies and a Daft Punk bassline that keeps the ground shaking. ‘Mourners Disco’ is a fantastic song that embraces its sadness and chooses to be productive with it. Producing one of the catchiest songs around in a seriously dark time.
