Creepmouse – In Past Tense / ep review + interview

Hailing from Liverpool, Creepmouse are an upcoming four piece rock band with a nostalgic tone and contemporary punk sound. Their mix of contemporary and classic is influenced by recent decades and genres adding to the distinct tone in their music. Creepmouse consists of Vyara on drums, Storm with lead vocals, Martin on bass and Ben on guitar. They’ve recently gained traction on social media, and now, they’ve released their debut EP; In Past Tense. The band have been into music for years, and after meeting in university they “eventually developed into a rock band”

In Past Tense begins with the new release, ‘Joyride’. ‘Joyride’ is more energetic with a harsher sound to their previous songs, but clearly this suits them. Creepmouse have been developing their sound and constantly improving upon it, “we understand how we work as a group now”, they’ve adapted over years as a band both as a team and musically, and this has translated to their music. ‘Joyride’ has an ever changing pace with an upbeat rhythm reflecting a wave-like swing to their sound.

Following ‘Joyride’ came the previously released ‘I watch you go’. The song begins with a heavy rhythm section holding a melodic power. This section and drum fill follows into softer vocals and guitar. The layers in the piece have been created with clear care and emotion, fitting together perfectly. Each song expresses familiar feelings whilst never being too specific, something anyone can begin to understand, “we want people to have their own interpretations”, a statement that reflects in Creepmouses music. That being said, we can’t claim the music to be detached from the bands music, a sense of personality and an emotional tone is consistent in this EP, ultimately Creepmouse are also “inspired by personal experiences and people in our lives.”

The penultimate song, ‘Too Long’ is another previous release. A stunning song about experiencing the struggles of mental health. With folky vocals, I’ve previously praised the song for its relatable lyrics and beautiful instrumental work, something that holds true. ‘Too Long’ holds an ultimately hopeful tune, handing that over to the listener; “We want people to find comfort in our music, but we also want to inspire” The song initially holds a more bittersweet tone before ultimately evolving into the bright and reassuring sound that it ends on.

Not unlike the rest of the EP, ‘Too Long’ demonstrates how the band switches up the articulation and uses the guitar to accent the vocal melodies.

Finishing off with another new release was ‘She Never waits’. This track is softer, slower and longer, than some of the other songs, but a beautiful piece nonetheless. With vocals reminiscent of the lead singer, Storm’s other work (under the name Written By A Poet), this quite simply pretty song was and is the perfect addition to In Past Tense. ‘She Never Waits’ stands out with a rhythm section that controls the heartbeat and a stunning guitar layer that works in tandem with the vocals. With vibes not unlike the Beatles and Oasis, it’s a song that makes you sway, a song that’ll make you smile. And that truly can’t be understated.

In Past Tense is a stunning first EP that truly outlines the musical skill of Creepmouse whilst still staying true to their emotions. It’s a musical safe space for fans and first time listeners alike.

I urge you to seek out Creepmouse and their stunning music, and if their current music isn’t reason enough, Creepmouse have been hard at work producing even more music and content for us, “We’ve been writing and spending time in the studio, so we might have something for the upcoming months.” So, make sure not to miss out on this wonderful band.
