Now signed to Submarine Cat Records, Bristol upstarts My First Time get underway on raucous single ‘Wind Up Merchant’. Bringing together a subtle acknowledgement of the Post-Punk resurgence with the ear-tingling worms of Pop, this debut is a punchy introduction to a band that definitely warrants your attention.
Written about the absolute lads you encounter on a night out, ‘Wind Up Merchant’ is a tongue in cheek homage to those who look to have an absolute riot with their bevs, or maybe a cheeky scrap or two. Driven by guitars determined to ram their riffs into your face, the song has no issue squaring up to you. The bubbling tension of the bassline adds some extra edge to the track, before erupting in a chorus that lets loose with noise.
The swaggering vocals with its Streets-esque flow really works well against the gritty instrumentation and adds plenty of personality. It makes for a real memorable listen. I feel like I know a lot of My First Time now and would love to have some mash and gravy with them. Maybe have a bust up after. Up the lads!
