Welcome to this month’s Fruit Salad! A new series we launched last month, where – finally – music and fruit come together. If you’re not aware, we put out calls for any artist that’s releasing music in the respective month to get involved and tell us what they’re releasing and, more importantly, what their favourite fruit is. The result is a heaping list of good music and great icebreaker conversations. Is it utter nonsense? Absolutely, but this is why running a music blog can be fun (sometimes).
It’s also an exciting time as we have launched the Fruit Salad playlist! A playlist that will feature every song and artist included in the series, til the end of time. There’s also the ULTIMATE FRUIT LEAGUE to check out too. So you can see which fruit is the tippy top in the world of music.
After Wednesday: “I know it’s unconventional but I gotta go with an avocado! But for more conventional fruits I think it’s a tie for me for clementines and bananas. Clementines for general snacking and banana for ice cream, smoothies etc!”
After Wednesday released their new single ‘The Network’, which features a Tortoise and Octopus playing chess. Who would win I wonder?
Alas de Liona: “It’s definitely a stone fruit, probably a nectarine.”
Aside from the mere mention of the badass stone fruit, Alas released their new single ‘Analogy’ on May 17th.
The Bliss: “Think it’s got to be pomegranate.”
Pomegranates are fantastic but gosh, the faff involved in getting the seeds out is obscene. The Bliss released their latest single ‘Balloons’ at the start of the month.
Bryony Williams: “Oooo my favourite fruit has to be a mango! Sadly, can’t be peeled though. But you get to feel a bit like a savage when you have to butcher it with a knife. All the context here.”
As well as sounding like a maniac, Bryony released her new single ‘The Party’ on May 14th. You can check out our full review of it here.
Club Paradise: “Ryan – Tomato, Nathan – Kiwi, Jackson – Strawberry, Harry – Banana”
Club Paradise released their latest single ‘Neighbourhood’ on May 10th and are also set to release summer hit ‘Chasing the Summer’ on June 21st.
Debbie Christ: “My favourite fruit is Peach, it’s my nickname actually. My previous project was called Peach Guevara.”
As well as having an amazing band name, Debbie Christ also launched her debut solo album Tower on May 10th. Featuring the single ‘We Carry On’, a song we’ve had spinning all month!
Eat Your Own Head: “Tomatoes because, apparently, it’s a fruit and I really like Tomatoes!”
New single ‘Trawler’ was released on May 8th. Featuring some badass artwork.
Fast Blood: “Pineapple – it’s sweet, tropical and delicious and adorns the Pina Colada <3”
Flast Blood released their debut album Sunny Blunts at the start of the month.
Finn Doherty: “Banana”
Finn recently released new EP if you’re bored of this city on May 10th.
Fold: “Seth & Jimmy – Mango, Phil: Banana, Sam: Blueberry, Jack: Apple”
Fold’s new single ‘Dark Matters’ is out now. Following ‘Forever War’, which was released back in January.
Gaffa Tape Sandy: “Easy choice for me; I love a good medjool date.”
Gaffa Tape Sandy’s new album Hold My Hand, God Damn It is out now! The singles from the album have been everything you expect from the band: energetic, loaded with riffs and fully in your face.
Gavin Turek: “Blueberries! Because you can have them in smoothies, salads, frozen, fresh…they’re so versatile!”
A huge honour to have Gavin Turek involved in our silly series. Her new single ‘IOU’ is out now and is seriously funky, catchy and sure to get you dancing.
Indoor Pets: “My favourite fruit FLAVOUR is strawberry – but I’m talking about that really plastic/syrupy flavour you get in milkshakes or ice cream. Okay, I’ve thought about it long and hard – and my actual favourite fruit is a red seedless grape. I can and have eaten entire vines in a single sitting. Perfection.”
Indoor Pets released their new album Pathetic Apathetic on May 10th. The follow up to their 2019 debut Be Content.
J. Henry: “It’s raspberry, but specifically heritage variety. It’s an autumn fruit and is delightful just off the cane, frozen (and blitzed with natural yoghurt as an instant frozen yoghurt), or in cooking. Versatile and juicy. It’s a bit late to plant now, but it’s a December job which will yield fruit from next August until October.”
J is releasing a new single from his upcoming album at the end of the month. Mysterious.
Jeffrey Chan: “100% without a doubt watermelon”
Jeffrey’s new single ‘My Oh My’ was released on May 23rd.
The Lunar Towers: “Oranges, Strawberries and Bananas for us!”
‘Morpho Butterfly’ was released on May 3rd and is an easy-going, acoustic number that feels right for the summer time.
MAGNOLIA: “Our favourite fruit is the humble Coconut, because they can be both eaten and drunk.”
MAGNOLIA released their debut single ‘Television’ this month. We raved about it in our full review, which you can check out here.
Mammoth Penguins: “I’d say lychees because I associate them with warm afternoons in my grandma’s garden, plus they’re like tiny dragon eggs and taste great.”
Mammoth Penguins released their fourth studio album Here at the start of the month. A real hard-hitting listen that wraps you up in its monochrome artwork and delivers a ton of great riffs and lyricism throughout.
The Menstrual Cramps: “Our fave fruit is orange and that’s why we wear orange as a colour on stage – dedication to the citrus fruit!”
Last week saw the release of The Menstrual Cramps’ new EP, Antagonistic. A furious, in-your-face listen that tackles all sorts of heavy topics with a lot of passion and anger. A great EP.
Runrummer: “Thanks for including me. I have to say I am rather partial to a mango.”
Runrummer’s new single ‘All I Wanted Was To Be Romantic’ was released at the start of the month, and is a seriously groovy number that is undeniably catchy.
Sam Millne: “In the meantime, I would have to say a nice tangerine”
Sam’s new EP Rockstar is out now.
Slow Team: “Kiwi”
Leeds trio Slow Team released their new single ‘Snake Melons’ earlier this month. You can check out our full review of it here.
Tadhg Williams: “Is watermelon a fruit or a vegetable…? Anyway, yeah, watermelon”
Tadhg recently released the Frank Edwards EP on May 17th.
The Yacht Club: “Ranked: 1. Mango 2. Pineapple 3. The Banana 4. Blueberries 5. Watermelon”
The Yacht Club’s new single ‘Rain’ was released May 14th.
Zoe Jennings: “Grapes is my final answer – lock it in!”
Zoe released a live version of ‘Cruel World’ back on May 17th.
