Dream Nails – “Control” // New Dead Good Music

Dream Nails make a highly anticipated return with “Control”. Following the departure of former vocalist Ishmael Kirby following last year’s Doom Loop , the new single sees bassist Mimi Jasson step up as the vocalist for their trio era.

“Our new track is about understanding why people might stay in an unhealthy relationship for too
long,” says Mimi Jasson. “The lyrics reflect ‘there’s good in bad and bad in the good’. Things are never simple; we wanted that nuance to come across.”

This gutsy number sees the trio return to their Pop Punk roots. Laying down a riff that immediately takes us back to the mid 2000s where the genre truly dominated the airwaves. While not quite as gritty as they were before, they are backed with thunderous drums that provide more than enough power to the song. Its chorus is a harmony-led worm that wriggles right into the ears, and really does not want to come out. It is proper catchy.

As they’re responsible for our favourite single and one of our favourite albums of 2023, we’re probably biased, but there was also no worry on our side about this new iteration of Dream Nails. “Control” comes in with all the gusto to prove that there really was nothing to worry about. It is a bold return to form from the trio, and a solid continuation from the Doom Loop days. I can’t wait to hear more from this new phase.
