Every year we say “it’s been a great year for music!”, but we really mean it for 2024. Each week it seemed there was a fantastic new album, an excellent EP or a hot new single released. Some that transcended artists into the stratosphere, landed them on a lot of radars, or threw them straight to the tippy top of stardom. It has been a marvel of productivity, and quite fun (also, chaotic) trying to document as much of it as possible.
Now’s the time where we try to condense all of that output into a Best Of list. We believe everything is subjective, so here are our favourites instead. We’ve spent months listening and relistening to so many – SO many – releases that it got a bit crazy for a second, and also reminded us to start these lists way earlier. Anyway, we are concluding with our Favourite Albums Of 2024. We hope you enjoy.
HONOURABLE MENTIONS:
Charli xcx – Brat and it’s completely different but also still brat
Brat summer shone bright this year, but the remix album kept the good times going. Brat and it’s completely different but also still brat was one of the most anticipated remix albums in years, and it succeeded in bringing a whole new wave of excitement to an album that was already taking off. Featuring collaborations with some huge names, the songs of brat were given a whole new perspective that made them totally refreshing.
The Penny Antics – AN ALBUM!
We wouldn’t be able to live with ourselves if we hadn’t mentioned The Penny Antics. Our favourite hometown boys have been featured in every iteration of this music blog, and this year they delivered with a new album. AN ALBUM! is a superb dive into the best of Punk and Grunge. Colliding the two genres together to create something that’s always in your face and willing to knock it off.
Mark Lanegan – Bubblegum XX
The final honourable mention goes to Mark Lanegan’s Bubblegum XX. One of the best rereleases in a long time, Mark’s legacy was honoured wonderfully with this expanded edition of the album. It’s a record that deserves to be lauded, and the rerelease comes with a crazy amount of extras. Lost tapes, demos and unreleased tracks – it’s a real collector’s item, and a dream for any fan of Mark’s work. RIP.
