Housewife had a very prolific 2024. The project of Brighid Fry released four singles from their upcoming EP, Girl Of The Hour. Arriving on March 7th via Submarine Cat Records. Alongside this announcement came “Work Song”, a new single that documents the internal struggle one has of being overly critical on themselves.
Speaking about the new release, Brighid says, “Work Song is about feeling unsatisfied with yourself and where you’re going. I have really high expectations of myself but also have really unhealthy habits and so oscillate between being a workaholic and being burnt out. I wanted to poke fun at myself, while still processing it as a valid issue in my life. This song is for anyone else out there with executive functioning issues who sometimes feel like a hot mess.”
Aside from saying exactly how we’re feeling lately, Housewife continues to bring more of that glittery alt-pop that refuses to leave our ears. “Work Song” is full of fuzzy guitars and melodies, and a driving rhythm that illustrates how quick time can pass. This is contrasted against Brighid’s vocals, that highlight how it feels to stall or stop plans and feel like you’re the only one standing still in a moving world. Its simple but catchy chorus makes it brighter than the likes of “I Lied” and “Divorce”, but still lays out an honest account of how it feels to question whether you’re progressing as much as everybody else, and heading down the correct paths.
As much as I’d like to not doomscroll the night away, and wake up on time, sometimes it is nice to sit in indecisiveness for a while. “Work Song” is an anthem for doing exactly that. It acknowledges how damaging and limiting it can be, but also comes with hooks that highlight how easy it is to do, too.
Each single released from Girl Of The Hour so far has been great, with each one focusing on different aspects of life, while also coming prepared with riffs that have kept us hooked. It looks like we’re set to have one of the best EPs of the year soon, and we can’t wait to hear it in full.
