Le Junk returns with new single ‘English Garden’. We haven’t heard from the London multi-instrumentalist since debut EP Hush back in 2023. In that time, we’ve witnessed a uprising of far-right political groups in England and beyond, which has shifted numerous elements of society in different ways. This is what Le Junk hones in on here. Using his trademark sound and reflective lyrics to bring it into our minds as well as our hips.
Touching on themes of prejudice and self-reflection, Le Junk explains: “The song is ultimately about how xenophobia can often be entangled and masked behind ideas of patriotism or national pride… something that feels particularly amplified in England with the recent rise of far-right political groups”.
Sonically, ‘English Garden’ kicks into gear with a gritty instrumental. Fuzzy guitars lay down a direct riff that pierces through the airwaves and into the brain to catch our attention. Its stomping rhythm is matched by equally distorted drums, and Le Junk’s vocals add to this looped style. Becoming another part of the instrumentation. It adds to the industrial nature of the song, and really builds the tension that stems from its topic.
As the lyrics depict the perspective of somebody who’s looking to change but feels unable to accept their past, the song continues to pummel with its urgent verses, but does slip into a more melodic chorus. The way it opens up, and adds more melodic guitars to the mix really gives it a vast sound, feeling like acceptance is possible.
It’s always great to have Le Junk around, and ‘English Garden’ is a strong reminder of how good and well layered his music can be. As catchy as the new single is, it also has the depth that gets you to think as much as dance. Here’s hoping more music is on the way.
