Lex Vervain releases debut EP // Review

Lex Vervain is probably better known for playing keys for the likes of Tenderhost and Ellie Bleach, and as his alter ego LXP, but today he’s released his debut, self-titled EP. The London-based artist comes armed with nothing but his vocals, acoustic guitar, and a set of songs that document his small world within the metropolis of the capital.

For those into the likes of Elliott Smith, Bedouine and Alex G, this is definitely one to check out. ‘Made In Heaven’ opens proceedings with a hurried but sombre array of sounds. A pulsating beat adds pace to Lex’s ringing guitars, producing this shoegeze-y sound that wraps so nicely around the vocals. It talks of tension and aggravation, but is a soothing listen that sets up the EP nicely.

‘Favourite Song’ follows with an intimate performance, in which Lex’s vocals feel as if they’re right beside your ear. Combined with the winding melodies and the pulsing percussion, it captures the hustle and bustle of the city. Feeling like you’re never truly away from it all. ‘Say It All’ takes it away, shutting the door to the outside world. It has a real romance to it, and a gravitas that makes you wanna stop for a moment to enjoy.

Sadly, the romantic vibe is over in time for ‘Digital Sink’. A piano-led number that documents a break up, and comes with all of the emotion to really make that impact sting. Lex’s vocals sound passionate and hurt throughout. Adding some grit and anger to the otherwise moody instrumental.

This is a brilliant EP. Lex Vervain has introduced himself in many ways – delivering a sound that highlights his influences while maintaining a personality throughout. There are stories told that give just enough details and emotion away. Making it easy to relate to Lex. At some point I fully believed I was in South East London with him. Lex Vervain is a wonderful listen. An EP that can be played forever and you’d never grow tired of.
