Hot on the heels of a brilliant 2024, Home Counties have announced new album Humdrum and shared its lead single. It’ll arrive on October 24th via Submarine Cat Records, and will follow the excellent Exactly As It Seems, which we still enjoy to this day.
Continuing to voice anger towards things and those who deserve it, ‘Humdrum’ takes aim at individuals who manage to fall upwards, while also spiralling in a downfall of one’s own social miscues. Recurring moments of cringe-induced breakdowns are a staple of my life, so this feels like a song I can relate to.
Shifting into a jittery, anxiety-ridden tune akin to a nervously moving leg, ‘Humdrum’ flits into the spotlight with a bold performance. Its synth-heavy instrumental pulses into the ears with immediacy, and is bolstered by scathing guitars that build upon this frantic intensity. Once again, Home Counties take advantage of their shifting vocal dynamic, as Lois Kelly and Will Harrison trade duties throughout to add further dimensions to the mix. Taking the song into its biggest and most melodic moments, while leading us through hook after hook after hook.
It doesn’t take long to sink its teeth into you. Just like saying “you too” to the Domino’s delivery driver after they say “enjoy your meal”, ‘Humdrum’ will last with you til the end of time, and has all the hooks to make it one of the catchiest anxiety spirals of the year. Thank you Home Counties for providing the soundtrack to our next social miscue.
