Kyoto Kyoto are a South London trio and this is their debut single, ‘Gaacher Blitz’. With its main riff inspired by techno artists who performed at the legendary Blitz venue in Germany, and with each member drawing influence from the likes of Krautrock, psychedelia, and straight up Glasgow Punk rock, this is probably the biggest, boldest introduction you’re going to hear this year. Holy shit.
Rather than head down one avenue, Kyoto Kyoto use their first offering to take us on a journey that spans many dimensions. From the flutters of melody and the rumble of the nigh-tribal drumming, it displays how far and wide their influences go. Amongst all this noise is a steady bass drum that maintains a solid rhythm, allowing the instrumental to continue floating and expanding in size. The vocals also choose to increase the unnerving atmosphere. Sounding direct yet barely coherent. Syllables lost within the noise.
As wonderful as this world-building has been, ‘Gaacher Blitz’ really lives up to its name in the closing moments. A thunderous display of heavy-hitting riffage arrive to create a seismic shift from this esoteric daze into a monolithic sound. It is heavy on everything yet you can pick out the crashing cymbals in the background, and it sounds fantastic. It is a proper battering ram on the ears. What a way to introduce yourself.
