goodtoknow release debut EP I’LL STAY // REVIEW

While some releases are born from meticulous planning and long-term vision, others owe their magic to spontaneity. I’LL STAY, the debut EP from goodtoknow, is a testament to the latter, a project sparked in the heat of a single studio session in Mexico City. Across its five tracks, the record carries the immediacy of music created without agenda, unfolding like an open exchange between friends: natural, vulnerable, and disarmingly genuine.

Clocking in at just over sixteen minutes, I’LL STAY thrives on brevity, but it’s a brevity dense with feeling. From the first notes, there’s an ease in the interplay between the musicians, Paula Prieto, Benjamín Walker, Sir Hope, and Mariano Gillio, as though the EP were not so much constructed as discovered. Their sound balances the delicate shimmer of indie-pop with the confessional immediacy of alternative folk, lending the songs a hushed intimacy. It’s music that seems less performed than breathed.

‘October’ opens the EP, introducing this world with quiet confidence. Its indie-folk tones are shaded by jazz-like fluidity, while Prieto’s voice delivers a melody that is both understated and unforgettable. The song embodies gentle melancholy, tracing the contours of change with grace rather than grandiosity. It sets the tone for the EP’s emotional palette: reflective, tender, but never indulgent.

‘Expect’ raises the pace, offering a touch of optimism without shedding the project’s stripped-back charm. There’s a diary-entry quality to the lyrics, their candidness amplified by a musical arrangement that feels celebratory but never overstated. The balance between fragility and uplift is handled with care, the track unfolding like sunlight breaking through a quiet morning.

At the centre of the record sits ‘Mad’. It’s a great addition to have at the halfway point. Then, ‘Burn’ comes in with its emotional core. Written in a single evening, it encapsulates the ethos of goodtoknow: raw, unfiltered, necessary. Its refrain lingers long after the track has ended, an understated anthem of vulnerability. Here, the group’s chemistry is at its peak, the instrumental space wide enough to breathe, the vocals direct enough to wound.

The EP closes with its namesake, ‘I’ll Stay’, a track pared back to its essence. Acoustic and nearly whispered, it’s the most intimate moment on the record, a song that feels almost private. Yet in its fragility lies its strength. The melody pierces softly, leaving the listener with both resolution and longing, a final reminder of the project’s deep sincerity.

What makes I’LL STAY remarkable isn’t just its sound but its sense of presence. These songs don’t strive for perfection; instead, they trust in honesty. The spontaneity of the session has been preserved in every note, every breath, every hesitation. Rather than polish away the imperfections, goodtoknow embraces them, crafting music that feels at once humble and transcendent.

In its quiet way, I’LL STAY is a statement of intent, not about ambition or star power, but about connection, about creating music that could not exist without this exact constellation of people, in that exact place, at that exact time. For fans of stripped-back beauty and heartfelt songwriting, goodtoknow have offered not just an EP but an invitation, and it’s one worth accepting.
