Messy Eater releases new single ‘Haunted Heart’ // Review

In time for Halloween, Messy Eater returns with ‘Haunted Heart’. The follow up to August’s Southern Fried EP features a special collaboration with London-based illustrator My Sunbeam, to deliver something groovy for spooky season.

As we heard on ‘I Think I’m Headed For A Breakdown‘, Messy Eater isn’t afraid to push the boundaries of creativity, and ‘Haunted Heart’ is filled with it. From the intro alone, with its haunting harmonies and Thriller-esque laughter, it already nails the essentials for a classic Halloween song. But instead of existing solely in the strange, the song hits with a bassline that’s ridiculously funky. Like, beyond the realms of groovy. Enough to make the crankiest of ghouls dance.

It adds a touch of levity to the mix, and blends the two styles together really well. Pete’s vocals sit within these layers, with their slightly distorted edge sounding commanding and almost old school in their execution.

‘Haunted Heart’ is a fantastic earworm, and definitely a song that warrants a spot on your Halloween playlists. Imagine following up Monster Mash with this? You’d be the king of house parties. Messy Eater has done it again.
