Since announcing their return to music with ‘Nonsense’, Brighton’s Luan Luan has become a staple of our playlists this year. Their sound is pretty special, and isn’t replicated anywhere else, so has really stood out from the crowd. This originality continues on their new single ‘Yellow’, and looks to bring some sunshine into these cold, winter months.
Written about the short, intense romance Luan experienced over the summer, ‘Yellow’ captures all of the emotions and highs felt. As to be expected, the instrumental blooms with vibrancy across its four minutes. Funk and Soul influence guitars to bring a simple but addictive rhythm to the ears, which allows the remaining layers to add further flavours to the mix. Luan’s vocals lead the way as they project the joy and warmth they felt with this person.
It’s simple topic is enhanced by Luan’s experience with synaesthesia, a condition that allows them to perceive sound as colour, which is illustrated by the use of yellow: a bright, warm colour that’s full of light, and seems to match the single’s mood perfectly. It makes the song sound sweet and dizzy in its own world, but also creates a chorus that flows between the layers and slips right into the ears. And while the story comes with an ending, it’s told fondly. Not allowing the bittersweetness to overcome the love that was felt.
‘Yellow’ is a superb song. It highlights how varied and vivid Luan Luan’s music is, while also showcasing Luan’s ability to create a strong narrative too. It’s also nice to hear some positivity in their music too – as ‘Nonsense‘ and ‘Would Be Better‘ spoke about pretty tumultuous times.
They’ve truly become one of our favourite artists of the year, and we can’t wait to hear from this upcoming EP. I’m hoping it comes to us soon!
