Alexandra Leaving gets citrusly good on new single ‘Gone Girl 2.0’ // Review

Alexandra Leaving returns with new single ‘Gone Girl 2.0’. In what’s possibly the most Dead Good coded release of the year, it seems our search for the most citrusy good music is over. You cannot get more citrusy than this. I mean, girly’s gone to town on an orange there. Amazing.

“Gone Girl 2.0 is an evolution. She’s not vengeful or venomous, in fact she’s quite indifferent and mostly bored. She’s restless, curious, ever changing. This song is about me (2.0). Working with Rory was wonderful, he’s usually fronting a post-metal band and with him I had the freedom to create a playful world, completely my own.”

To stop making it about us, the third single of the year from the London/West Midlands artist is a bit of a rebrand. Not only is it the first release that sees Alex take on co-producing duties, it also welcomes an Indie style that’s filled with hooks. The heaviness has eased a little, but the guitars are still the driving force behind it. Their palm-muted chords flit through a scatty rhythm that feels infectious, and hits the heights as Alex proclaims statement after statement. Each one bolder than the last. We’re happy she’s taking her vitamin c – especially as we head into Winter – but this feels like a whole new era. It’s great.

For those who are wishing for Summer to last a little longer, ‘Gone Girl 2.0’ has the vibe to make it feel that way. Alexandra Leaving has once again delivered something that’s juicy and ripe with grooves, and will be very hard to remove from our ears. It seems like a middle ground between the massive walls of sound we heard on ‘The Wall‘ and the more delicate ‘Hold The Sugar‘ – It is very appeeling.
