Alexandra Leaving releases new single ‘Hold The Sugar’ // Review

After a fruitful 2024, which saw the release of An Exorcise In Anger and a couple singles, Alexandra Leaving returns with ‘Hold The Sugar’. The London artist has been a favourite of ours for some time now, and is somebody we can rely on to throw all sorts of noise into our ears. This new single heads into a different direction though. Bringing a subdued, vulnerable side of Alex along with the volume.

Talking of the single, Alexandra says: “I wanted to capture the sensation of being trapped in a cycle … floating though dreamy verses then being pulled into intense, darker choruses. Mirroring what that relationship felt like. You escape the cycle by the end though, that’s the important bit.”

It really is a song that draws you in at different angles. Its intro is soft, with clean guitar chords ringing out against pained vocals. Creating a dream-like verse that makes you lean in a little closer. This intimate setting is allowed to build momentum, as eventually drums join to bring the song towards its chorus, which brings with it the familiar walls of sound Alex is known for.

The contrast is strong, and works really well with the heavy song topic, and illustrates the flood of emotions that come with experiencing a toxic relationship. ‘Hold The Sugar’ is great, and while not quite as much of a rager as ‘Out Of This World‘, does hold its own as a force. Hopefully this means we can expect to hear more from Alexandra this year – her output last year was superb, and more of it would be great.
