Becca Lovelace returns with the gritty but seductive “A.M. Departure”. It’s been a while since we heard from the Devon-turned-London artist, having released her debut album Lands back in 2016. Now, with news of upcoming album We Wanna Be There arriving soon, we can throw ourselves into the deep end of the Lovelace waters.
Speaking about “A.M. Departure” Becca states: ‘I wrote this song the morning after one of those wild, endless, debaucherous nights, when you walk home with the sun coming up behind you. The day is ending for you but starting for the rest of the city. The night before still sticking to your skin and your vision of the world through cling film but you then find that comfort in coming home.’
With its stop-start rhythm and cries of sweating bodies beneath bedsheets, the single wastes no time in setting the tone. With breathless harmonies laced inbetween Becca’s honest statements, the song heads wildly into a Desert Rock atmosphere. Sometimes that walk home feels like an endless wander through the desert, and those harmonies give hints of QOTSA and PJ Harvey as those emotions float into the air. And much like my favourite band, the instrumental doesn’t offer much variation, but would rather keep you entranced in its rigid sound. Its grittiness bleeding through the mix as the beat sinks into the hips.
There’s nothing quite like wearing the memories of the evening while the cool air of a new day hits you. This feeling is captured wonderfully on “A.M. Departure”, and has the groove to make you wish to relive it over and over again. Hopefully the wait isn’t long until we hear more from Becca Lovelace.
