Bryony Williams – ‘Trip Me Up’ / New Single

After a lengthy time away, Bryony Williams returns with ‘Trip Me Up’. Yay! As a huge fan of Bryony’s work, this is a good day. The new single is the Midlands artist’s first release since 2020’s State I’m In EP, and with a pandemic and upstart of a DIY music magazine passing by (shoutout Grrrl Groannn), Bryony is back with a bang(er).

“At the core of Trip Me Up, I essentially wanted to revisit typical old school, prom-like romance we get from films made in the 90s, but with a modern twist. The narrative throughout the track though is through a female lens and shows the frustrations and complications that young love encounters (or at least like it is in the movies) whilst on a journey of reclaiming a sense of self and power in this storyline.”

With its romanticised topic, ‘Trip Me Up’ feels like an old school tune you find yourself returning to over and over. Its instrumental is filled with snappy drums, wandering basslines and dreamy synthesisers, which give off a real nostalgic sound. Its urgent tempo doesn’t disturb the serene melodies, instead focusing on the hips with its rigid groove. Depicting the flood of emotions – all emotions – that comes tangoing with love at a young age.

Bryony’s vocals sound defined but filled with emotional waver. As if they’re keeping it together to remain defiant over the dancey instrumental. It makes it easier to connect with the song, as it allows the lyrics to take a more prominent feature with each listen.

It’s a great song and definitely gets the hype building for more Bryony Williams. With news of a debut album set to appear later this year, ‘Trip Me Up’ is a very welcome reintroduction to an artist who has been lying low for way too long.
