Crumb return with ‘AMAMA’. The new single and title track from their upcoming album, which is set for release next month. Having enjoyed some massive hits over the years, the New York band look to push the boundaries of their other-worldly sound. Reaching dizzying new heights of hypnotic sounds to really wrap you up in a perfect soundscape of noise. Like becoming the filling in a warm tortilla. Hmm, sounds lovely.
With phone recordings, pitch-shifted vocals, blips, booms and fizzes, ‘AMAMA’ has no right to be as catchy as it is. It has all the tools to be a really polarising, mind-melting tune, but Crumb make it work. Bolstered by steady drums and basslines that do their own thing, the song feels like a walk through someplace new – you have no idea what’s around, but everything feels like home. Led wonderfully by the wandering vocals of Lila Ramani, I wouldn’t mind being lost in it forever.
For a song that’s packed with so many elements, ‘AMAMA’ sounds vast and full of space for others to join in. It is loaded with grooves and plenty of atmosphere but doesn’t have a problem with when you decide to jump inside. It’s loose enough to feel alright with whatever you do, and I think that’s pretty cool. Cannot wait to hear the new album.
