Dear Rouge are back with new single ‘Fake Fame’. With two albums under their belt and a third set for highly anticipated release next year, the Canadian duo look to come back into focus with this storming tune. Written about the allure and toxicity of stardom, it highlights how diluted the idea of “being famous” has become. In an age where people can buy followers and verification, and others suffer because of it, this has become an important issue in these times.
To contain a topic so loaded, ‘Fake Fame’ does sound seem bogged down at all as it blasts through the ears with sheer speed and power as it actively rejects the notion of fame. But while its topic could come across as negative, the song is absolutely stacked with hooks. The chorus in particular offers harmonies that can persuade any crowd to sing along, while the “I don’t want your fake fame” line heard throughout comes with a defiance that also makes it fun to say. I often feel *too famous* so regularly say the line to my colleagues at work when they try to call me. But seriously, this defiance seeps through to the instrumental to make that also sound ballsy and rampant too.
The instrumental comes packed with all sorts as it moves in any and all directions. Whether that’s the chaotic drums at the start to the melodic acoustic guitars right to the undeniably groovy percussion, there’s something for everyone here. It hits hard but offers a dance at the same time, something that definitely sits right with me. I can’t get enough of it and will be joining the eager crowd for their upcoming album for sure.
