deep tan continue to take 2021 by storm with new single ‘tamu’s yiffing refuge’. The East-London outfit have burst onto the scene with a slew of hard-hitting releases – including the excellent creeping speedwells EP – but now the trio look to provide an insight into the world of furries. Written about furry lust and witnessing said lustiness at a furry convention, the song at the very least gets people talking, and I can dig that. I could write it off as strange, but that would be un-fur.
Released as part of Speedy Wunderground’s ongoing singles series, ‘tamu’s yiffing refuge’ peels back the layers while maintaining the essence of deep tan’s sound. While the ominous presence heard on ‘camelot’ is gone, there’s still something unnerving that remains. It could be the guitar that skulks its way through the instrumental without much purpose but has the confidence to seem like it knows what it’s doing. Either way, it fools me. It has a groove about it that’s boosted by the barely audible loops of bass in the background.
The vocals group furries and god together in a way that makes me question things. Its vague enough to not make sense, which makes it fit right at home. It is immediate, confusing and even a little bit seductive too. Really learning a lot here. ‘tamu’s yiffing refuge’ comes as no surprise if you know what deep tan bring to the table, but it also has the ability to make you pull up a chair too. I’m so excited to hear where they go next.
