Demob Happy – Divine Machines / album review

Demob Happy return with new album, Divine Machines. Three albums deep, the genre-bending band look to continue melting the mind with their open-minded approach. Pushing the boundaries and unleashing raw energy, Divine Machines is the record we turn to for when we want to let loose for a little bit.

‘Token Appreciation Society’ kicks things off with a shimmering set of guitars that immediately makes you feel cool. Its thunderous drumming, jagged riffs and larger-than-life vocals welcomes you into its easy-going groove. Harnesses that power to make you walk like a badass. As you strut your stuff down the street, the lyrics challenge conformity and encourage individuality – certainly providing the soundtrack to make you stand out from the crowd.

‘Voodoo Science’ follows with a dynamic riff that sinks deep into the hips. Channelling the band’s experimental side, its hard-hitting instrumental splits off into the atmosphere. Leaving behind a trailing mix of distorted guitars and pulsating rhythms. Its chorus kicks into gear and solidifies the track as a straight up banger. ‘Muscular Reflex’ throws more direct attacks but infuses it with psychedelic harmonies that really blur the two together. It almost sounds like a fever dream; one you’d wish to have forever.

Things head into a melodic route on ‘Super-Fluid’ as the guitars bring infectious hooks and an anthemic chorus to showcase Demob Happy’s ability to craft memorable moments throughout their sound. ‘Run Baby Run’ bursts with energy and drives a serious section of riffs into the ears that make it a must for all running playlists.

Divine Machine is a superb listen that delivers a bold sound that leaves many electric highlights throughout. Demob Happy are three albums in to their careers by this point, but it still sounds like they’ve only just arrived on the scene. This is a great album, and one that will further cement the band as one to rely on.
