DMA’S – I Love You Unconditionally, Sure Am Going To Miss You / EP Review

Sydney’s rock trio DMA’S return with a surprise release

There is absolutely no better surprise than new music from everyone’s favourite Aussie trio, is there? Luckily for us DMA’S dropped a brand-new self-produced EP on August 20th called ‘I Love You Unconditionally, Sure Am Going To Miss You’, and we haven’t stopped listening to it since.

The four track record marks their first new music since ‘The Glow’ which was released last July, and it really sees the trio go back to their original rock roots. Described as “a reminder of where they came from and how far they’ve come”, the EP is a tribute to rock music as well as the bands oldest fans who have been following the trio since the beginning and who fell in love with their early sound.

Eagle-eyed fans may recognise the title of the EP from a shot in the ‘Delete’ music video; it was a message left on a pinboard for the boys by a friend of the band, and they loved it so much it made the front cover and title of the new album.

First ‘1 Way’ starts things off fast and loud with noisy shoegaze guitar. Vocals take the backseat here, making for the perfect atmospheric opening track. Lyrically the song is nostalgic as vocalist Tommy Odell sings “I could take you down the back road / memories of you and me / we can hold it in our hands”. The track also has a really long outro and I’m already dying to hear played live.

The anthemic ‘We Are Midnight’ is next featuring brilliant hooks, Tommy’s soaring vocals, and layers of dirty distorted guitar that create a wall of sound, and a massive singalong chorus. Lyrically the track is romantic, written about transition and change in a relationship that parallels the transition to darkness at night. And if you don’t already love the track, you definitely will when you check out its accompanying video starring Tommy’s dog Truman.

Upbeat noisy number ‘Viol’ is a n explosive pop track that brings brilliant energy and maintains the pace of the record. Written by drummer Matt Mason, the track is racing and packed with melody, oh and it also features vocals from guitarist Johnny Took for the first time ever!

The EP closes on a bittersweet note with ‘Junk Truck Head Fuck’, a downbeat, beautiful ballad that is formed simply of electric guitar and Tommy’s vocals. Originally written 8 years ago by Johnny, the track is raw and stripped back showcasing relatable lyrical storytelling and is possibly my favourite off the EP.

In all I Love You Unconditionally, Sure Am Going To Miss You is an organic, noisy pop record that is packed full of energy. It effectively delivers ‘Hills End’ vibes, and a few surprises, that are sure to be enjoyed by old and new fans. If you like noisy guitars and big melodies then this is the EP for you!

DMA’S are set make their highly awaited return to the UK this Autumn with an onslaught of live dates, where UK based fans can finally hear tracks from ‘The Glow’ and the EP live. Why not check them out and listen to ‘I Love You Unconditionally, Sure Am Going To Miss You’ below.
