Elanor Moss returns with her new EP, Cosmic. Last year she provided a powerful introduction with Citrus. An EP that documented a traumatic time and became a brutal admission of emotions that resonated deeply. On her newest project, the Yorkshire songwriter showcases her growth as she looks forward to what’s to come.
Where Citrus illustrated the now, Cosmic aims to describe the aftermath. Beginning with ‘Sorry Song’, Elanor reflects on past actions and moments that might have caused tension. Ranging from the trivial to the huge, the song feels like a final revisit on the past before moving on fully. It has a levity to it that seems as if it is floating away from Citrus. Moving along nicely with uplifting harmonies and melodies.
‘Catholic’ follows with an edgier sound that signals new horizons. Crunchy guitars collide against solid drums before falling towards a grooving bassline. Its ambitious tone is matched by bold statements of wishing to be loved, producing what is Elanor’s most immediate song yet.
This rejuvenation certainly freshens things up and provides endless possibilities to explore. ‘Cosmic Memory’ harnesses this change with an equally compelling performance that embraces the heightened tempo and packs it with upbeat chords, swooning strings and little extras that suit Elanor’s voice really well.
‘Mary’ closes out the record with a final sweep of noise that feels homely. Yearning to restore friendships after experiencing bouts of depression, it’s a throwback to the Citrus era but has a composure to it that feels assured. Its tender guitars and vast echo provide the perfect backdrop for Elanor’s vocals to ring out lyrics of comfort and emotion. It is lovely.
Cosmic is an EP that celebrates a new found confidence and perspective on past events. While Citrus was steeped in the trauma, Cosmic has distance from it, and uses that space to experiment with new sounds and directions. It is a joy to listen to, and highlights Elanor Moss’s wonderful songwriting abilities.
