If Ellur is yet to reach your radars, then consider this latest release an introduction to the Halifax-hailing indie queen, Ella McNamara, and her stellar band.
‘Missing Kid’ is the latest single from Ellur following the release of her God Help Me Now EP in January. It’s the first of a series of songs that are ‘really important’ to Ellur, and if this track is anything to go by, it’s a perfect introduction that’s making us all the more excited for what’s to come!
Self-described as ‘a song for people who self-reflect too much’, Ellur explores the feelings of overwhelm that come from stepping into adulthood and realising you don’t know who the hell you are, filtered through the lens of a summery indie-pop anthem. It’s a must for your playlists if you feel like a care-free boogie – its bubbly alternative, indie sound is one that Ellur wanted to recreate especially for this track to showcase the excitement she experiences whenever she plays live, complete with a super-fun and super-cute music video to match the vibe!
Lyrically ‘Missing Kid’ delves deep and doesn’t shy away from the feels, with Ellur saying that “writing this song helped me heal”. The track holds strong themes of feeling lost as “every aisle I look down I’m looking like a Missing Kid” conveys both feelings of nostalgia and panic whilst evoking the common shared experience of losing your parents in the supermarket and not knowing what to do! These feelings can pop up unexpectedly when trying to navigate adulthood, when every obstacle and avenue you encounter becomes tinged with a sheer panic of not knowing which direction to go in. How do you listen to yourself and know which way to go when you don’t know who you truly are or what you want!?
The earworm that Ellur has written with this track is definitely one for us all to sing back to her from the crowd – “This sinking feeling I know it so well” is a scream for help when you are so unsure of yourself; when you crumble whilst faced with both challenges and opportunities. Ellur beautifully captures the vicious cycle that you become stuck in if you’ve spent your whole life following others and people-pleasing – it’s so hard to break free and learn how to choose what YOU want.
‘Missing Kid’ is a cathartic release about finding yourself and accepting that it’s okay not to know everything, with Ellur using this track to self-reflect and heal by “kicking the hinges of the doors to the next chapter” – and, if you relate, she hopes that “listening to it helps you in some way too”.
