The wonderful Foxglove are back with new single ‘Birthday’. I’ve been a huge fan of the Manchester quartet since ‘Bright Lights’ landed on my radar. That being a great introduction to their sound became cemented by the more subdued ‘Give It Up’ released earlier this year.
I’ve been anticipating new music from them ever since, and ‘Birthday’ absolutely knocks it out of the park. While the aforementioned ‘Give It Up’ offered a more emotive sound, this new single brings back the energy Foxglove have become known for. It leads with driven guitars, bright melodies, and massive drums to immediately fill the room with anthemic power. Sounding as direct as ever, it’s arguably their biggest track yet.
‘When I wrote the lyrics to this song, I was angry at the way some people reacted to situations going on around the world, and it also made me realise how you only start to notice this as you grow up. Usually, I keep my opinions to myself, but I felt I needed to get this off my chest, and that’s where the lyrics for Birthday were born; this is the first time I’ve ever written lyrics like this.’ – Abi White
With such a loaded topic, ‘Birthday’ is full of gutsy lyrics and punchy performances that fully supports the emotions packed into it. You can feel the relief reverberating from it as it builds into its chorus. I’ve felt for a long time like giving the middle finger to people always chiming in with opinions on social media, and this song feels like it’s giving off all the middle fingers, so it makes for even more of a satisfying listen. Foxglove have done it again. ‘Birthday’ is a fantastic song.
