Vienna’s GARDENS are back with new single ‘Good This Way’. It’s the first taste of new music since last year’s Flaws, and with the dream-pop quartet set to storm The Great Escape festival this weekend – their first ever UK shows – it seems like now’s a good time to climb aboard the hype train. Choo choo!
Detailing lead vocalist/songwriter Luca Celina Muller’s retelling of a personal heartbreak, the single takes us on a journey through the highs and lows of a fledging, and ultimately failing, relationship. Talking about it, Luca says: “The opening lines describe a real situation in which I felt confronted with someone else’s heartbreak that I had originally caused, thereby shattering his belief in our everlasting love.”
The early years of experiencing relationships are always so innocent, and it really does feel like an unhappy ending is an impossibility. There’s a hopefulness that lies in that naivety, and it is a punch to the gut when you undergo a break-up. Luca’s vocals do a great job conveying all of the emotions that come with experiencing this, and being the one to initiate it. That sadness and guilt comes through the lyrics clearly, and sink into the walls of pure synths that surround them. Once the realisation hits that it’s good to experience all of this, the song kicks in with a flurry of fuzzy chords, snappy drums and all manner of synthy arpeggios. Brightening the mood and adding some serious groove to the ears.
‘Good This Way’ is a great song, and one that feels like a well-measured approach to love. There’s a maturity to it that accepts that sometimes what’s best for us doesn’t always feel good to do, but is worth doing. And on top of that, it’s catchy as heck too. Here’s hoping we hear more from GARDENS soon.
