Ghosts of Our Former Selves – Golden / EP Review

London-based band Ghosts of Our Former Selves have shared their stunning new EP, Golden. The band, which consists of singer Theo Brehony, guitarist Sanderson Rocha and producer Fred Ala, have been steadily rising on the music scene for a number of years now, and they look set to keep their momentum going and reach new heights with this latest release – arguably their best to date.

The four-track project contains three different versions of the song ‘Golden’, each offering something different, and a cover of Paul Simon’s ‘Mother and Child Reunion’. The story behind the EP’s title track is particularly interesting. Theo Brehony was an only child and raised in a Greek community by a single mother, and he was considered to be her ‘golden boy’. He was once told during a heated argument with an old flame that he had ‘golden boy mentality’ and that he couldn’t be a ‘golden man’, which he later drew inspiration from for writing the song.

Speaking further on the track, Theo says, “I met my wife a few years later, and I was about to become a dad. I decided to raise him just as my mother had with me. You need to remember those emotions and unfiltered moments and recreate them whenever you can. I’m doing it all again – my son is the golden boy now.” The track is elevated further by its unique retro style production, which incorporates elements of folk, rock and gospel.

A sublime project about growing up and becoming a parent, the ‘Golden’ EP really highlights what a great talent Ghosts of Our Former Selves are, particularly their songwriting. And when combined with their diverse and interesting production choices, their music makes for a fascinating listen.
