Glossy Clouds are back with their debut, self-titled EP. From the singles released in the run up, they displayed a pretty clear indication that the French quintet enjoy creating funky grooves. With a penchant for Funk paired with some Glam Pop, I was excited for the EP as you’ve essentially got a good time guaranteed.
Kicking off with ‘Plastic Moustache’ comes a snappy beat and muted riffs that already direct you to the dancefloor. Prince-esque chords slide into frame and suddenly we’re dancing. The vocals slip into the rhythm with ease, and the female harmonies in the background drop hooks like it’s 1999. Genuinely one of the catchiest starts to an EP I’ve heard this year.
‘Buy All That You Want’ continues the momentum with another bouncy number that captures all of the joy the band had during their road trip of California. While it offers a heavier sound to ‘Plastic Moustache’, those crunchy riffs stick firmly to the Funk/Glam Pop brief. ‘Beauty Machine’ tones down the tempo to offer a much more composed sound. Fingers snap in the background as hushed vocals and bluesy chords lead the way.
Glossy Clouds is a fantastic listen. It is one of the catchiest EPs of the year, with a large amount of accessibility on show. There’s a serious drive to deliver hooks into your face, some coming packed with a punch. It offers some excellent highlights, all coming within this ambitious set of balladry that really makes the songs stand out. The chorus of ‘Save Yourself’ came with a massive impact, and I’ll never forget the chorus to ‘Starsisters’ too. What a way to introduce yourselves.
