Home Counties – ‘Uptight’ / New Single

As a thirty-year-old, clubbing is something that never enters my mind. Plans on a Friday night? Are you kidding me? I’m going to bed.

Don’t get me wrong, clubbing was THE place to be during the ages of 18 to 25 (the prime social years.) All we wanted to do was head to a club and not hear your mates for several hours, while drinking overly priced, watered-down drinks, wondering when the next fight’s gonna be. (Note: RIP Unit 7, gone too soon. Or maybe, gone too late.)

Fortunately, Home Counties have written the definitive anti-club anthem. Embracing their dancier side, the London six-piece have taken their dance moves from the floor to the studio, creating a really catchy song that’ll stick to your mind more than your feet on the floor at The Pink Toothbrush.

“‘Uptight’ is our answer to a 00’s club banger, complete with the crudest synth tones and Britney-esque ad-libs. In contrast to your typical ‘dance-all-night-long’ mantra of 00s pop songs, ‘Uptight’ is about not wanting to go clubbing anymore.”

With news of their debut album Exactly As It Seems coming in May, this latest tune showcases a slight diversion from their awkward, angular sound into one that fully embraces its awkwardness. The off-kilter rhythms are there, but there’s an addition of synths that soften those shapes. It is all the good parts of Talking Heads and David Byrne’s massive suit thrown into the steadily declining expectations of clubbing, leaving behind a song that I cannot get enough of.

Its agitated disco sound matches up with the exasperated vocals, that spout a constant dialogue of everything wrong with clubbing: the prices, the drinks, the FOMO and subsequent regret of showing up. Its frantic and direct all at once. Providing everything for the mind and hips.

‘Uptight’ is a fantastic song. One that proudly reveals all of the emotions and thoughts we had on clubbing growing up. They are almost always rubbish, and Home Counties have created a voice for the voiceless. I am obsessed and cannot wait to hear more from the upcoming album.
