I feel like this week there has been an influx of duos on Dead Good, as once again we have another duo in the form of HUNYBEES! The Hertfordshire duo are back with their second single of the year ‘I Keep Falling in Love’, which follows their earlier release in 2021 ‘Let Me Love You’ (I double checked, it’s not a Mario cover).
Taking influences from the likes of The Strokes and The Magic Gang, pop is at the heart of their music. This shines through with the ridiculously catchy chorus and guitar hook, they clearly know how to write an affective and infectious chorus. Sometimes with duos, especially with ones who are not acoustic based, it can sound like there’s something missing in the track. But with HUNYBEES this isn’t the case, everything is running at full-pelt and it sounds like a full band.
One thing I wanted to note was the standout vocals on the track, they have this full and quite bass-y sound to them. Similar to Fred Macpherson from Spector, but unique in there own way. Just wanted to give that a mention, as I haven’t heard vocals like that for a while, and it really made the track jump out.
It seems like after starting out in 2020, HUNYBEES have a clear grasp on the band they want to be with their sound and nailed down. Also from reading about them and flicking through press pictures, they seem like they don’t take themselves too seriously – which is always a bonus. If you listen to anything on this New Music Friday, please let it be HUNYBEES, you won’t regret it.
