Following on from ‘Wild’, Hushtones are back with ‘I’ve Got Time’, the second single from the upcoming debut record Greetings From The Other Side.
Hushtones always deliver a dose of nostalgia infused with modern sensibilities and problems- a vision of a time that predates us, through rose tinted glasses blended into the cold reality, conflicts and confusion of fumbling through 2021. ‘I’ve Got Time’ is no exception.
Close your eyes and you’ll find yourself driving along a sunkissed beach in the 70s, escaping your life and issues in a haze of accepting who we must become and embracing that release. But its lyrical sensibilities capture the difficulty of the here and now, going through turbulent times, surviving as best you as can.
That may sound like a lot of contrived drivel from a pretentious standpoint, but it’s insulting to not represent ‘I’ve Got Time’ as anything less than an atmospheric, transformative and healing track.
‘Locked inside my head for so long’ feels like an allegory for the last year, calling for an escape. But it’s not a somber track, ‘I’ve Got Time’ provides space to pull away from the shackles of our own minds and throw ourselves forward into a better world, where we regain the confidence we’ve been forcibly stripped of, to a time of fulfilment, and making up for the lost time. Belting out ‘I’ve got time’ repeatedly in the chorus is beyond reassuring, all of us feeling like we’ve aged significantly through this pandemic in many ways we probably don’t want to have and regressed in others.
‘Maybe next year I’ll send myself a postcard from another busy day’ is perfectly on brand for Hushtones, a dreamy vision of a better time.
It’s no wonder they’ve drawn comparison to Blondie, Fleetwood Mac and Sunflower Beam. The quintet excels with shimmering guitars, ethereal indie pop vocals and a masterful blend of voices, we just know Greetings From The Other Side is going to deliver us the nostalgic indie pop we need.
‘I’ve Got Time’ is available to stream on all platforms.
