South Wales trio Sawtega have launched their debut single ‘Tower’. Comprised of Izzy Warren, Mark Naylor and Dylan Burris, these guys know how to make an entrance. Honestly, I haven’t been this excited by a new band in ages.
They bring an ideology to the band that spans cycles of destruction and rebirth, mirroring grief and horror through an apocalyptic aesthetic, and channel it through influences that shakes the Nu-Grunge and Nettle-Core genres. Essentially, it’s awesome.
Commenting on the single, Izzy says: “Tower”, the song really built itself. The theme and name of the song derives from the ‘tower’ card in tarot. Imagery of destruction and rebirth, the grief that these bring and mirroring that with the setting of a final girl in a post-apocalyptic world.”
Steeped in heaviness and taking cues from Nu-Metal, ‘Tower’ immediately throws you into its world. Fast flurries of guitars bring waves of ferocious riffage to the forefront, creating an urgency that drives the song forward, and shrouds you in darkness. The drums sound so abrasive, with the cymbals acting as a thunderstorm while Izzy’s vocals do a great job detailing the anguish and regret that comes from being in this apocalyptic nightmare.
It hits hard and I really like how relentless it sounds. Sawtega have certainly nailed their introduction, and I’m excited to hear what’s next from them. With rumours of more music out soon, and an EP coming out next year – these are definitely ones to watch.
