London based James Sullivan releases his debut solo album Light Years in November and we’ve been treated to a couple of cuts from this album.
Lead single “Lea Bridge” has a spoken word account of his experiences and weariness of everyday life in dare I say “a hum drum town”. Backed with a fuzzy guitar, James sings about wanting to laze around all day. The spoken word bit reminds me of Jarvis Cocker in some of his spoken word parts in Pulp.
Second single “You Kept My Heart Alive” released earlier this month has more of a poppy feel to it. The optimistic vibe masks a tale of melancholy and the beautiful bit of violin midway through further adds to that. It’s a song of romance and hope to counter the negativity.
Both songs show a different side to James’s songwriting and are a great showcase to the forthcoming album. Brilliant stuff.
“Lea Bridge” and “You Kept My Heart Alive” are available to stream now with the album Light Years to follow on November 5th.
