Joanie – Neurotica / EP Review

Joanie has been building quite a buzz about herself over the last year. Thanks to singles such as ‘Schadenfreude’ and ‘Kerosense’, there’s an edge to her music that makes it really appealing to those who wish their Indie-Pop could be just a little bit dirtier. This has fortunately culminated in Neurotica, a debut EP that offers a fleshed-out introduction to an artist who’s on the rise.

It’s ‘Schadenfreude’ that kicks off the EP, tackling the sickness of modern age and its insistence of being online, all the time, everywhere. As Joanie questions the enjoyment people find in the downfall of others, the song delivers a disco groove that’s steeped in grit and ready to go. Its beat is relentless, making it hit hard and be catchy all at once. Joanie’s soft vocals drape themselves over these hard layers, allowing space for horns to add a touch of sensualness to the mix too. It is a great way to get underway.

‘Kerosene’ follows with an equally thrilling listen. Vocals lose their breath against another rigid groove, revelling in the deep rumbles of the bass notes. Sketchy guitars scatter themselves across energetic drums, adding flair and further dance moves to the floor. It leads nicely into ‘Casino’, which seems more intent in getting you to dance. If you haven’t hopped a scotch just yet, you certainly will by now.

‘Your Kind Of Freak’ closes proceedings with one final confirmation that Neurotica is great. Its shimmering, throwback sound draws the curtain but ensures one final party occurs before it closes. Filled with magnetic beats and larger-than-life vocals, it is a fantastic way to end what has been a great listen, and easily one of our favourite EPs of the year. Joanie has piqued the interest, and its exciting to see where she goes next.
