After months of anticipation and plenty of praise along the way, Kindelan finally drops her debut EP, you can reach me if you try. We’ve been captivated by the works of Laura Kindelan since “The Other Side” introduced itself in our inbox and are pleased to hear that her first extensive release offers more of said captivation. Combining poignant lyricism with a world of introspection, this is an introduction that deserves to be heard.
Opening with “Listen”, the EP gently makes itself known with a series of soft harmonies and synths. It feels like moving branches to the side to reveal a lush landscape that invites you to explore. As it builds in strength, it snaps into a Jazz-flavoured arrangement that immediately grips you. It is groovy while retaining the atmospheric elements that made you lean in closer; providing a solid summation of what’s to come.
“The Other Side” continues to envelop the listener into its haunting atmosphere, months after its initial release. The combination of Laura’s emotive vocals with the fluid, ever-changing instrumentation demands attention. Its ability to build tension against the lyrical theme of tentatively reflecting on relationships is superb, and it remains a deeply relatable and powerful tune.
“Feast” opts for a stylistic turn, leaning into the Jazz-influence to bring the EP’s most imaginative and evocative song. Vivid imagery are laced throughout an instrumental that is directed by Laura’s drawn out harmonies. The soft snap of the drums bring needed texture against the lyrical themes of desire and temptation, highlighting Kindelan’s versatility and making it a real highlight.
As much as the longer tracks make an impact, the shorter cuts also make you pause. “She” takes a minute to deliver a stripped-back instrumental as Laura details the complexities of human connection and the vulnerability that comes with being in love. It’s here where her vocals really shine, as you can feel the emotional weight on them. It is a beautiful, tender listen.
“Can’t Sleep” closes out the EP with a nice summation of the sound heard throughout it. The atmospheric tone is layered with haunting melodies and intricate percussion, creating another soundscape that envelops you. Delving into the joy of restless nights and all the thoughts that seem to arise at the absolute worst times (I can relate heavily to that), the song moves at an alarming rate. Slowing down for the melodic parts and speeding up rapidly for its most hectic moments, it feels like a rush of emotions coming all at once. It is another powerful listen and a superb conclusion to the EP.
You can reach me if you try is a fantastic EP. It serves as a solid introduction to Kindelan, and highlights her ability to deliver captivating, intriguing instrumentals while breaking down the complexities of human emotion and other loaded topics in a way that makes it deeply relatable. It establishes Kindelan as an artist to keep an eye, certainly leaving us exciting for what comes next.
