Lady Silver – Circus Pop / Album Review

Roll up, roll up to Lady Silver’s new album Circus Pop. The 10-track LP splits into two halves that together characterise the band. Turning from satirical takes into genuine romance, Circus Pop is equal parts fun and sincere with a riff heavy backdrop.

What’s so great about Circus Pop is that the album’s first five tracks demonstrate the band’s signature wit and sly satirical charm. Amongst them, single ‘News of The World’ made waves with its deep-fake video that saw a host of famous faces as reporters in a tongue-in-cheek exploration of fake news.

Circus Pop’s back half sees the band take a more earnest turn, without giving up raw blues inspired rock power. Tracks like ‘You Are The One’ give more space to lead singer Max Spon’s gravelly and emotive vocals, while also unleashing bombastic riff-driven soundscapes to release the rousing build ups of the single’s bridges.

“We began recording our album at the peak of the pandemic when you virtually weren’t allowed to leave your house. We created our own ‘band bubble’ and met in an underground studio. To avoid police on the way we managed to get hold of a couple of jackets branded with a delivery company logo.”

Circus Pop is an odyssey through the wild west of today’s societal themes; the rise of influencer and hater culture, online dating, fake news are all up for the taking here. As for the name? The band explains: “It’s a play on words and a joke. Like a new musical genre and also a fizzy drink you drink at a circus or a festival.”.
