Lauren Hoyle returns with her first single of the year in ‘Hate Me First’. Taken from her upcoming EP Fun, this new tune is a ballsy take on the traditional break-up song. It firmly throws a middle finger to the ex in question and decides to have some fun with bad times while moving on in the best way. In other words, it’s badass.
“Hate Me First is all about your ex telling bad things about you to your mates. I got really insecure that all of our friends would turn against me and they’d think I was a terrible person, but in reality, it’s not like that. We’re all grownups. I wanted to write a song with a bit of sass, a moment of f*ck you, I’m moving on”. – Lauren Hoyle
Full of gritty guitars, stomping drums, and all sorts of attitude, ‘Hate Me First’ is a powerful listen. The instrumental is a frantic set of power chords and melodies, all performed with a tempo that tears through the speakers. Lauren’s vocals detail lyrics that tell it like it is, and while giving you an insight into her immediate thoughts post-break up, it’s done in a way that keeps things rocking nicely. There’s something badass about hearing “Turning me into a monster” strung out against the most anthemic of melodies.
‘Hate Me First’ is a superb song from Lauren Hoyle. It’s loud, unashamed, and absolutely ready to dominate your ears. Very excited to hear more from Fun too.
