Little Suspicions release their new single ‘Giving Up The Ghost‘ – a classy little number about late nights and early confessions. The band established a modern indie take on a retro 60s swing, with their 2020 debut, ‘Wasting All My Time’. Now two years later, the band have certainly moved forward with a refined take on this sound.
‘Giving Up The Ghost’ croons with a romantic melody, however the story is less hopeful. From one bar to the next, they are in search of their lover, the piano tracing their steps in between verses. While the track is physically looking for this person, there is also a sense of feeling lost within the relationship. The lyrics question the lover, “tell me how you feel”, and suggest some level of knowing the underlying truth – “do you find it hard to say that I can’t have you”. ‘Giving Up The Ghost’ is more than a search party, it is asking the difficult questions. A deep dive into feelings unknown, and wanting to know where to go from here.
Despite the demanding of answers, the track’s dreamy tone softens the blow with a respectful charm. They even throw in some Italian at the end, just to add to the romantic croon of it all. Something that stands out is the band’s skill with imagery. Take earlier track ‘Limes’ for instance, a blissful haze of a song, conjuring visions of a dream girl dressed in green. ‘Giving Up The Ghost’ draws up the scene of a night in town, but also a lover hiding away. You can sway through the soft glow of pub lights, perfectly in time with the music.
This new single sees Little Suspicions at their best, with hopes for even more to come in the future. ‘Giving Up The Ghost’ is available to stream now.
