Low Girl announce debut album; share ‘Handbrake’ // Review

Low Girl are back with new single ‘Handbrake’. It’s their first since last year’s ‘Icarus’ and also comes with news of a debut album. Is It Too Late To Freak Out? will arrive on October 24th via AWAL, and as fans of the band since the Big Now days, we’re well excited.

Having steadily amassed a name for themselves over the years, it’s been great to see the band bloom into a quartet that melts genres together. ‘Handbrake’ is no exception, as it takes us on a journey as it manoeuvres through post-tour blues and depression to great effect. Rooted guitars meet snappy drums to wander through the airwaves with Sarah Cosgrove’s vocals. It all comes together to create a soundscape that’s rich with melodies and a sombre tone that drives the theme home.

The shift in tempo, from the driven section that ponders if one has what it takes, alongside the additions of backing vocals, basslines and flutes ensure the track remains fresh, and keeps us wanting to explore more of it. I’d be fine being lost in it forever.

‘Handbrake’ is a superb song. Low Girl have this excellent ability to make music that transcends all boundaries and makes atmospheres you could sit in on, and this is illustrated superbly by this lead single. I’m hoping we hear more from the upcoming album soon.
