Low Girl – Uh Oh / EP Review

The third EP from UK-based outfit Low Girl, Uh-Oh sees the band expand on their indie-rock sound with vulnerable lyricism and guitar-driven riffs. The 17-minute EP acts as an emotional outlet for lead singer Sarah Cosgrove, who is open about her conflict-oriented relationships and personal trauma that she’s been struggling with. Backed up by bandmates Toby, Tom, and Brad, each member presents a unique groove that would be fantastic to see live.

Darting from the hints of punk on “Knees” to the acoustic gracefulness of “Scared,” the group builds on influences ranging from the likes of Bon Iver to the Arctic Monkeys. It’s not hard to see why Low Girl has gained notable acclaim on both the BBC radio and indie Spotify playlists. The band has an innate ability to create an atmosphere that mirrors the songwriting.

“Bored” is the most straightforward indie-pop track, with electronic synths and snappy drums  accompanying an earworm hook. My personal favourite from the EP, “Scared” is a fittingly vulnerable closer. Soothing guitar strings draw the listener in, “is what I’m feeling right?” / “I wanna feel less alone.” Lyrics aren’t sugar-coated, as Cosgrove puts her heart on a plate for the audience to indulge in.

Starting the year off with a bang, it wouldn’t be of any surprise if this wasn’t the last we heard from the band for the calendar year. Low Girl has been steadily releasing new music over the past year, covering varying indie-rock styles with each record. Another best kept secret in the British indie space, it will be exciting to see how the group grows both personally and sonically with future projects.
