Mat Hunsley has continued his return to the limelight with his new and spacious single, ‘Rambling’.
The track builds on his previous two releases – both released this year after an extended hiatus – and it once again showcases the kind of confidence that suggests the Newcastle-based singer never left.
Mat seems settled and well planted throughout the track, which puts his angelic vocal right at the heart of its simplistic and dreamy consistency.
Musically, the track avoids being placed into a one genre: there’s elements of the indie-folk, neo-soul, and alt-pop throughout the tune, which leaves it ultimately feeling like a well-crafted amalgamation of Fleet Foxes, Jordan Rakei, and Matt Corby. The combination of both acoustic and electronic instrumentation goes a long way in making the single feel like something genuinely fresh, whilst the melodic and ambient nature of its sound gives it an undeniable listenability.
‘Rambling’’s lyrics focus on themes of self-doubt, mental fatigue, and insecurity and were written by Mat as a reminder to himself about how far he’s come since going through a period of personal difficulty. The singer’s willingness to tackle issues so close to his heart points further to the fact that his mojo is well and truly back.
Back in 2017, Mat was forced into a hiatus by mental exhaustion. The following four years became a journey of self-acceptance for the singer, who finally came to rekindle his passion for music in 2021.
Mat seems as comfortable as ever now and, as testament to that fact, has recently announced plans for a new EP in January with accompanying tour dates.
