Cardiff-based alt-rockers, Mawpit, have returned with ‘Eye To Eye’; the latest instalment to their forthcoming and ever-developing EP.
Following their formation in late 2019, the trio began to court attention in 2020, a year that saw the group release a host of grunge-inspired singles and accumulate the beginnings of a fan base.
Their last single ‘Mum I’m Sorry’ (also featured on Dead Good) was the first to come from their unreleased EP, ‘Common Enemy’ and introduced audiences to Chara; a character with whom the band portray their own views on modern society. In ‘Eye To Eye’ we find Chara confronting those that have, in the band’s words: “solidified their toxic, outdated views” and in doing so, have made finding common ground impossible.
In terms of its sound, the track builds on the fast-paced grittiness present on its predecessor; showcasing heavy influence from the grunge and alt-rock music that the group all grew up with and firing itself out of the blocks with the explosive urgency we’ve come to expect from the band.
Frantic drumming paves the way for the tracks distorted and thrashing guitar lines to take centre stage, while the loud and enthralling vocal from frontwoman, Cait consolidates the track’s rapturous sound.
The track is particularly strong in its lyricism, which again reaffirms the band’s determination to be as defiant as they are loud. Lines such as: “If you set yourself in stone you’ll be a relic in the making” point out the insipid and stale nature of some of society’s intolerant members while: “you got a brain, educate it properly” throws further shade in their direction while sarcastically offering them advice.
With ‘Eye To Eye’ Mawpit have added an electrifying track to their live set list and further contributed to the excitement surrounding both their forthcoming EP, and the band as a whole.
